Jeep did not provide any details about its power system, but said that when the electric SUV is officially unveiled at the 2021 New York International Auto Show at the end of August, all the details will be revealed.
Now, Grand Cherokee 4xe may share the same PHEV power system with PHEV. Wrangler 4xeThe system combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine and two electric motors, which can provide a healthy output of 375 PS at 5,250 rpm and 637 Nm of torque. The output is sent to the wheels through the TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission provided by ZF.
Jeep has another plug-in hybrid system that uses a smaller 1.3-liter turbo gasoline engine (240 PS combined output), but these are used for Renegade and Compass 4xe.
Other engines that power the flagship SUV include a naturally aspirated 3.6-liter Pentastar gasoline V6 with 290 PS and 348 Nm, and a 5.7-liter gasoline V8 with 357 PS and 528 Nm. Both mills are equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The V6 variant comes standard with a single-speed, electronically controlled full-time active 4WD transfer case, but this can be upgraded to a low-end two-speed electronically controlled transfer case. The front axle of the 4WD model can be automatically disconnected to improve fuel economy during cruising, while the V8 model can be equipped with an electronic limited-slip rear differential.
