College football lost an idol on Sunday, when former Florida State University coach Bobby Bowden died at the age of 91. For a beloved, colorful, and most successful man in the history of this sport, the story is vast and rich.

Yes, he “only” won two national championships. There are a few coaches more than this. But by one indicator, Bobby Bowden is unique among the fraternity of legendary college football coaches.

From 1987 to 2000, his Seminoles ranked in the top 5 of the Associated Press every season. No one can come close to this sustained success. In the top 5 teams for 14 consecutive years, he was not only independent, but also ran a few laps on the court.

This is another way of looking at Bowden’s running. Bear Bryant of Alabama is widely regarded as one of the top coaches in the sport. In his 23 years in Tuscaloosa, he has been in the top five 12 times . He has never won more than three consecutive victories. Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler, Urban Meyer, Jimmy Johnson, Joe Paterno, and many other great men did not.

more: After Bowden passed away at the age of 91, more people paid tribute to Deion Sanders

This is the list of coaches who have won the top 5 in at least four consecutive AP polls.

Clemson’s Dabo Swinney is expected to enter the top 5 for the seventh time in a row this year, which will allow him to reach the midway of Baoshan Mountain and tie with Pete Carroll’s outstanding performance at the University of Southern California. The Tigers showed no signs of slowing down either on the recruiting route or on the court, so maybe Swinney will be on par with the height of the Florida legend.

But for now, Bowden’s performance is unique.
