frozen whole avocado

If you want simplicity, this is the easiest way to freeze avocados.

Wash the skin, then wrap in plastic wrap and freeze. Take the avocado out of the refrigerator and let it thaw overnight in the refrigerator.

To be honest, this is my least favorite way to freeze avocados. I prefer the other method as this allows the avocado to be used in smoothies or other recipes without extra work.

Freeze avocados in chunks or slices

Step by step how to freeze avocado slices

In this method, cut a fresh avocado in half lengthwise. Remove and discard the pit. Then slice the avocado into thin slices or chunks and carefully peel off the skin.

You can also remove the skin before cutting or slicing, but I find it easier to do this afterwards.

Place avocado slices on a plate, tray, or baking sheet on parchment paper and squeeze with lemon or lime juice. The acidity of the juice helps prevent browning.

Put a plate of sliced avocados in the freezer for an hour or so – this is called a quick freeze, then place the frozen avocados in a freezer bag to freeze.

Mash avocados and freeze

Step by step how to freeze avocado mash using a silicone tray.

My favorite way to freeze avocados is to mash and freeze!

Remove the avocado from the skin.

Abandon the pit.

Put the avocado flesh in a bowl.

Using a fork or masher, mash the avocado until you get the desired consistency.

Squirt in a little lemon or lime juice and stir well; this will help prevent browning.

You can also use a food processor to make mashed avocado. If you’re making mashed avocado baby food, this is my recommended processing method.

Spray with lemon or lime juice so the avocado doesn’t brown. This also adds a fresh flavor. Then dispense into Ziploc bags or containers.

My favorite way to freeze mashed avocados is to use a two tablespoon silicone tray – like this one from dinner cubes. This tray allows you to freeze avocados in a size suitable for avocado toast or smoothies. You can also use an ice cube tray to freeze portions of avocados.

  • You don’t need to defrost avocados when using them in smoothie recipes. Just add a few slices or ¼ cup mashed avocado and mix.
