The Indian drug regulatory agency has approved Zydus Cadila’s COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use in adults and children 12 years and older. This is the world’s first DNA vaccine against coronavirus.
The approval promotes India’s vaccination plan, which aims to vaccinate all eligible adults by December and will provide the first shot for people under 18 years of age, as the country is still working to control the virus in the country. Spread in certain states.
The ZyCoV-D vaccine uses a piece of genetic material from a virus that sends instructions in the form of DNA or RNA to make specific proteins that the immune system recognizes and responds to.
Unlike most COVID-19 vaccines that require two or even one dose, ZyCoV-D is administered in three doses.
The generic drug manufacturer is listed as Cadila Healthcare Ltd. Its goal is to produce between 100 million and 120 million doses of ZyCoV-D each year, and it has begun stocking vaccines.
Zydus Cadila’s vaccine was developed in cooperation with the Ministry of Biotechnology, and is the second indigenous vaccine to receive emergency authorization in India after Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin.
The drugmaker stated in July that its COVID-19 vaccine is effective against new coronavirus mutants, especially the Delta variant, and that the injection is done using a needleless applicator instead of a traditional syringe.
According to data from Johns Hopkins University, regulatory approval makes ZyCoV-D the sixth vaccine approved for use in the country. So far, only about 9.18% of the country’s population has been fully vaccinated.
Zydus Cadila also submitted data evaluating the two-dose injection regimen in July, and plans to seek regulatory approval for this.
The company has applied for the authorization of ZyCoV-D on July 1, based on the effective rate of 66.6% in the later trials of more than 28,000 volunteers nationwide.
