The court restored Nepal’s lower house and ordered Sher Bahadur Deuba to be appointed as the new prime minister.

The Supreme Court of Nepal restored the parliament, which was disbanded by the caretaker prime minister KP Sharma Oli in May and ordered the appointment of his rival Sher Bahadur Deuba as prime minister.

Monday’s move dealt a major blow to Oli. He was unable to obtain a majority in the House of Representatives and tried to pass Dissolve the parliament May 22.

Ollie’s move triggered a new constitutional crisis in the Himalayas. This marked his second attempt to dissolve the parliament in recent months after the split of his party in December 2020. But in February Overturned by the Supreme Court.

After the reorganization of the Nepalese parliament, Oli lost a vote of confidence on May 10. However, before his rivals asked, he suggested that Nepal’s President Vidia Devi Bhandari dissolve the parliament, saying that neither he nor the opposition leader Deuba would be able to obtain a majority and form a new government.

On Monday, Supreme Court official Debendra Dhakal said that the court had ordered the parliament to reconvene within seven days.

“It also ordered the appointment of Sher Bahadur Deuba as prime minister within two days,” Dakar told Reuters.

Deuba is expected to conduct a vote of confidence within a week.

Ollie’s office or his assistant did not immediately comment.

Hundreds of Ollie’s supporters gathered outside the Supreme Court to protest the court’s ruling.

One of the protesters, Ramesh Acharya, said: “We are here to protest the unconstitutional decision of the Supreme Court, which interferes with the affairs of Parliament and its rights.”

The protesters had a brief scuffle with the riot police who were able to repel them. No one was injured or arrested.

As Ollie still has a lot of public support, there may be several protests later this week.

In 2018, after the Communist Party of Nepal won a majority in the House of Representatives, Oli became prime minister. However, the party split twice this year, weakening Ollie’s power.
