In 2017, a resident of the city Pombal in central Portugal he found in his garden fragments of fossil bones. The man informed researchers from the University of Lisbon about his discovery.
At the beginning of August 2022. they entered the place where they were found paleontologists. It turned out that the vertebrae and ribs found in the garden belonged to brachiosaurus, a herbivorous dinosaur of the genus sauropod.
The sauropods were the largest of all dinosaurs and the largest land animals that have ever lived on Earth.
“It’s amazing to find all the ribs of an animal like this, let alone in such an arrangement that preserves their original anatomical position,” said Elisabete Malafaia, a researcher at the University of Lisbon.
The size of the bones found in the garden suggests that a dinosaur had 12 meters high and 25 meters long. According to scientists, it may be the largest dinosaur ever discovered in Europe. The skeleton was found in sedimentary rocks of the Upper Jurassic, suggesting that it is approx 150 million years.
Due to the natural position where the skeleton was found, scientists hope to discover more parts of the same dinosaur on further excavation.
Brachiosaurus were one of the dinosaurs “brought back to life” by scientists in the famous film by Steven Spielberg “Jurassic Park”.
