The Philippine leader is legally barred from seeking re-election, and critics say he is seeking the second-highest position to stay in power after the end of his term.
According to the Philippine Democratic Party-Laban Party, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has agreed to become the ruling party’s vice presidential candidate in next year’s election.
Tuesday’s announcement was made before the National Assembly on September 8. It is expected that the PDP-Laban Party will also support Duterte’s aide and Senator Christopher “Bong” Go. Become its presidential candidate in the 2022 polls.
Carlono Glales, executive vice president of the PDP-Laban Party, said that in accepting the support of the ruling party, Duterte was making “sacrifices” and listening to “the voice of the people.”
Nogras said the move would “guarantee the continuity of government plans over the past five years,” including plans to tackle the problem of illegal drugs.
The Rappler News website quoted three officials as saying that Duterte, 76, made the decision on Monday night.

Duterte portrayed himself as a reluctant president, not hungry for power, and has repeatedly expressed his hope that Go will be his successor. His support in 2019 helped Go to become a senator, which is his role as Duterte’s personal assistant while performing his duties.
But on Tuesday, Go said in a statement that he was “not interested” in running for office, although it is known that he has traveled across the country in recent months, which has sparked discussions about his plans.
Go said he continues to focus on his work in the Senate.

The PDP-Laban split into two factions, one under the leadership of Duterte’s allies, and the other under the leadership of internationally renowned boxer and Senator Manny Pacquiao.
