“The Red Army enters the territory of Poland two and a half weeks after the attack by the Wehrmacht and the Luftwaffe, it fulfilled the provisions of the secret part of the Hitler-Stalin pact, signed on August 23, 1939 by the heads of both diplomacy: Ribbentrop and Molotov, “recalls President Andrzej Duda in an article published in the Times of Malta.
The politician adds that the two totalitarian empires forged an allianceplanning to divide the independent states of Central Europe among themselves. “The crimes of Nazi Germany, however, were at least morally condemned by the entire free world. Unfortunately it was different with the crimes of communist Russiathat went unpunished and often forgotten “- emphasizes Andrzej Duda.
Duda goes on to explain what the Soviet occupation of over half of pre-war Poland was. “It brought the Katyn massacre: the extermination of 22,000 prisoners – officers of the Polish Army, policemen and soldiers as well as officials and other political prisoners. They were shot against all international conventions because Stalin recognized them as irreconcilable enemies of communism and patriots faithful to their homeland. It brought the deportation of half a million of my countrymen to labor camps and places of forced settlement in Siberia and the Asian part of the Soviets. The vast majority of them never returned from this ‘inhuman land’, dying in exile, “he writes.
The president emphasizes that Nazi and Stalinist imperialism was to decide the fate of the nations and states of our part of Europe.
“The Soviets defeated the Nazis and in 1945 they took over the entire territory of Poland and further countries to the west and south, as far as the Elbe, Danube and Drava. They incorporated some of them directly into the Soviet state as federal states – this was the fate of the Balts, Belarusians and Ukrainians. In others they installed puppet governmentscomposed of local communists completely submissive to Moscow – this is what happened in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria and eastern Germany “- reminds Andrzej Duda.

The president emphasizes that the independence of any country in our region has always been a thorn on the side of the Russian imperialists. “So as soon as Moscow recovered from the shock of losing the Stalinist sphere of influence, it began to strive to rebuild the empire. We remember the 2008 military attack on Georgia. We also remember the brutal suppression of freedom movements in Belarus and Ukraine several times, “he writes.
According to Andrzej Duda Russia always wants power over all of Central and Eastern Europe. “But free Poland, free Ukraine and all other independent states in our region will never agree to it. For our nations it is a matter of life and death, preserving identity and survival. It is a matter of our future, security and prosperity” – summarizes the president.
