The University of Kentucky wants to prevent the state from registering a trademark for the term “Kentucky Team.” USA Today Report.

This public flagship university filed a counter-notification with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on August 13. The notice believes that the state’s slogan may be confused with the university’s sportswear trademark, thereby harming clothing sales.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has been using the slogan “Kentucky Team” since the 2019 campaign and used it throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The Commonwealth must respond to the university’s notice by September 22.

“Under the federal trademark law, the UK must declare its ownership of trademarked words and images,” the university’s spokesperson Jay Brandon told USA Today“The university has acted in accordance with this federal regulation and submitted this information to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The UK has been cooperating with the Governor’s Office throughout the process.”
