The point is that they are all assembled locally, which begs the question-is Arteon deliberately designed to challenge the status quo? We talked with Marco Pavone, head of exterior design at Volkswagen, and Tomasz Bachorski, head of interior design, to find out.

Compared with most other countries, Volkswagen is regarded as a near-premium brand in Malaysia, and its price is also comparable to BMW and Mercedes. Did Arteon’s design take this into consideration?

Pavone: Design is a good tool to convey the value of cars. But, of course, the price tag of a car does not just depend on its design. Volkswagen is known for its high-quality processing and craftsmanship.

This is reflected in the details of the new Arteon-frameless windows, hood design, exterior and interior lighting, and the choice of interior colors and materials. We believe these are key factors to attract new target groups and customers from other premium brands.

At least in terms of interior design, the gap between Arteon’s facelift and Passat is even greater. Talk to us about the reasons behind this.

Bahorski: At the beginning of the Arteon project, we had two main goals-to create the biggest difference between Arteon and the former Passat, And design our best quality model to date to cater to the new target market.

The theme of Passat’s interior is the design of the vents. This is why it is necessary to consider the new design theme of the vent in the case of the new Arteon. Therefore, for the new Arteon, we created a slimmer and driver-facing vent with a visible decorative sheet design. There is no classic circular controller on the side of the air outlet of Arteon, giving it a simple, modern and sporty appearance.

Below the vent is our visualization of the 3D design, which connects the dashboard to the door. Together with the door handle, we see it as an extension of the exterior front grille design. Then we also included ambient lighting as part of the interior, running around the cockpit and integrated in the door trim (or decoration). This solution allows us to make the lighting more “seamless” than Passat.

Other differences include the materials used and their location. In Passat, we used wood and other materials in the lower area. For Arteon, it is located in the upper half of the cockpit area. This façade extends into the new digital cockpit instrument cluster area and is brought into the car door. This wrap-around theme creates a “room” concept, making the interior visually wider.

Around the main infotainment display, we also have a new decorative design. This brings a more seamless and integrated appearance, similar to a tablet. In addition, we are equipped with a new touch-sensitive air conditioning control device under the infotainment system, which is more modern than Passat.

Malaysia is one of the few markets where Arteon is assembled locally outside of its German and Chinese mother plants. How important is this and what are the key factors behind it?

Volkswagen product communication team: We recognize that to be competitive in Malaysia, local production is a key factor. Currently, 100% of the product series provided are assembled locally, which should be the real pride of our Malaysian colleagues.

Will Malaysia’s relatively poor fuel standard (Euro 4 for gasoline) affect or limit engine selection? Are there any plans to provide engines with gasoline/gasoline particulate filters here?

Mass Communications Team: Although the quality of different fuels around the world obviously needs to be adjusted, the engines provided by Malaysia are suitable for local fuel standards. Engines with particulate filters are currently being tested in Malaysia.

To recap, the new Arteon will be equipped with the highly anticipated EA888 2.0-liter TSI turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which can now produce 280 PS at 5,100 to 6,500 rpm and 350 between 1,700 and 5,600 rpm. Nm of torque. This is actually 50 Nm less compared to the European model, but it is still much more powerful than the 190 PS and 320 Nm output of the upcoming model. The seven-speed DSG wet dual-clutch transmission and 4Motion AWD will accelerate it from zero to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds.

Standard equipment includes full LED headlights, LED taillights with sequence indicators, 19-inch Montevideo two-tone alloy wheels (same as before), Nappa carbon printed leather interior, 12 speakers, 700-watt Harman Kardon sound system, 9.2 Inch Discover Pro infotainment touch screen wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connection, 360-degree camera, hands-free electric tailgate and Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) adaptive damper.
