It’s always good to refresh your familiarity, or if you’re new to the world of CBD and cannabis, a quick, basic definition is a great place to start your journey!
CBD stands for cannabidiol. Cannabidiol is one of about 100 cannabinoids, a compound found in the cannabis plant.
Other cannabinoids you may be familiar with are probably CBC, CBN, CBG, and the one that many people are a little confused about about the difference between CBD and other cannabinoids is THC.
THC is a cannabinoid that is psychoactive and makes you feel “high” or “comatose.” While CBD does have a similar effect of making your body feel more relaxed, somewhat similar to THC, CBD doesn’t feel “numbing”.
It actually helps your body restore balance, which is sometimes important so that your body has a chance to recover from whatever is affecting you at the time.
Cannabidiol was first discovered in 1940 after it was isolated from cannabis by Raphael Mechoulam and Yechiel Gaoni. It wasn’t until 1963 that researchers discovered that it could bind to human receptors. This discovery led to further research into its potential medical benefits.
In 1964, Dr. Roger Adams isolated CBD from plants and determined that it had analgesic properties in animals. He also found that CBD suppressed brain twitching in mice and blocked smooth muscle peristalsis in the gut.
In 1988, Dr. Raphael Mechoulam isolated another cannabinoid called CBD-A and determined that it had no psychoactive but anti-epileptic effects in animal models. He then isolated another non-psychoactive cannabinoid called cannabidiol (CBG). CBG is the precursor to other cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, including THC and CBD!
Different forms of CBD
As mentioned earlier, cannabidiol (CBD) is a compound in the cannabis plant that has many therapeutic properties. It is non-psychoactive and has been shown to have potentially significant effects in assisting with the treatment of epilepsy, anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and insomnia.
The popularity of CBD has led to an increase in the number of CBD products available on the market. You can find CBD oil tinctures, capsules, edibles, and even CBD honey bars! Here are some ways you can use CBD.
CBD gummies are one of the most popular ways to get your daily dose of CBD. They are usually sweet and always contain some amount of CBD, and sometimes you can find vegan CBD gummies! Not only that, but almost every CBD brand makes CBD gummies. Some of our favorite full-spectrum CBD gummies are made by Five CBD, which only makes full-spectrum CBD products. CBD gummies are usually available in predetermined doses of 10mg to 25mg, but sometimes you can find a brand that provides them with a lot of CBD, such as Chef Botanicals, which has 100mg in a 30-count bottle.
The CBD category has changed a lot over the past few years, and that’s CBD beverages. CBD beverages come in many forms, including CBD water bottles, CBD coffee, CBD soda, CBD tea, and one of our favorite dissolvable powders at CBD school, like this one from Caliper CBD, that can fit in your bag until you get the urge to add some CBD to your system.
CBD Oil Tincture
The most common CBD product associated with the CBD industry is CBD oil, which comes in a bottle with a dropper that delivers CBD sublingually to your tongue. Put a few drops under your tongue, let it absorb into your system, and start your day! Tinctures are an easy way to get a daily dose of CBD, however, for some people, it can be difficult to get a consistent daily dose. You can also add tinctures to smoothies or other recipes for added health benefits.

One of the best ways to fight muscle and joint soreness is to put some CBD lotion, balm or CBD ointment on your skin and let the CBD and other ingredients do their job there! Seriously, if the CBD theme hadn’t been invented, we’re not sure where we would be. By combining ingredients like arnica, peppermint, shea butter, and more with CBD, the CBD brand has really helped our weekend warriors stop the throbbing pain we used to have from overworking out. Some of you reading this may be more comfortable getting your daily CBD by smoking CBD flowers, or if you don’t like rolling your own, CBD cigarettes or pre-rolled cigarettes. Both are really a great way to lower specific CBD strains that you know can provide the help you’re looking for. For example, if you have insomnia or sleep problems, you might want to pick up some Indica CBD flowers for yourself, a great way to extend your sheep count. Indica is a good CBD sleep strain, and since most (if not all) CBD brands don’t specify which CBD strain they use in their products, buying CBD flowers can be very beneficial. Another way to consume CBD through smoking is CBD vape pods or CBD vape juice.
The benefits of using CBD
Numerous studies have shown that CBD may be beneficial in helping certain people with certain medical conditions.1 This doesn’t mean you should rely on CBD to “cure” anything about you. More research is needed to ensure that CBD can deliver long-term benefits to consumers.
That being said, CBD has been shown to have a positive effect on people with sleep disorders, anxiety problems, chronic pain and more.
Many of the benefits that CBD offers consumers are due to the endocannabinoid system. This system helps regulate many activities in the body such as pain perception, bone mass maintenance and many others. Here are a few ways CBD can help with common problems people have:
Helps with inflammation
Inflammation is part of the body’s immune response to infection or injury. In most cases, however, inflammation becomes chronic, and long-term inflammation can lead to serious health conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. Inflammation can also occur without any apparent cause, such as allergies or autoimmune diseases like arthritis. Chronic inflammation is one of the main causes of cancer development in humans today, as it promotes cell growth, leading to tumor formation (cancer starts in normal cells and has become rogue). CBD helps fight inflammation, which can restore balance to the body.
May help treat epilepsy

A recent study found that when combined with another anticonvulsant drug, CBD significantly reduced seizure frequency in people with epilepsy.2 Results were compared to patients taking only anticonvulsants and no changes in dosage regimen or treatment regimen. The FDA has actually approved a CBD-based drug, Epidiolex, for the treatment of seizures associated with Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.
A study suggests that CBD may help reduce anxiety in people with social anxiety disorder (SAD).3 Research has found that CBD oil can reduce levels of stress hormones in rodents exposed to stressful environments – suggesting it may also help reduce anxiety in humans. We mentioned earlier how CBD can be very beneficial in restoring balance to the body, thereby reducing anxiety levels in CBD consumers.

CBD has been shown to reduce pain in patients with multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, nerve pain caused by diabetes, and other painful conditions. Likewise, while many studies suggest that CBD can be very useful in fighting pain and chronic pain, it is not a definitive solution for treating the disease. If your doctor says you won’t experience any drug interactions with any current medications and CBD, it’s best to find a brand and CBD product that works for you and slowly add it to your regimen.
